Activation regions, and why they ruin more purchases than anything else

A region lock is a restriction attached to a key by the publisher, not by the shop selling it. It says the key may only be attached to an account located in a given territory.
It is the leading cause of disputes in this trade, and it is almost always avoidable.
Two different things get called region
Activation region decides whether the key works at all. If it does not match your account, the platform refuses the key outright.
Language or content region decides what the game shows once installed. A key can activate perfectly and still give you a version with a different default language, or a version with content cut for a local rating board.
The first is a hard failure. The second is a disappointment. They are not the same problem, and a shop that blurs them is hiding something.
Where your account region comes from
On most platforms, the account region is set from the country you registered in and from your payment method history. It is not set by where you are sitting today, and it is not changed by a VPN.
Using a VPN to activate a key outside its region breaks the terms of most platforms. It can also lock the account. That is a real risk, not a theoretical one, and no saving justifies it.
How to check before buying
Look at the region stated on the product page. Worldwide means it activates anywhere. Anything else is a restriction, and it should be named explicitly.
If a listing says nothing about region, treat that as a red flag rather than as an absence of restriction. Sellers who do not state the region are usually the ones with something to hide.
Why it cannot be undone
Activation is a one way operation. The moment a key is accepted, it is consumed and bound to that account. There is no unbind, no transfer, no second use.
That is why a key that failed on the wrong region cannot simply be moved. Either it was never activated, and it can be replaced or refunded, or it was activated, and it is spent.
